Finding the right role
When you’re thinking about a potential new job, it’s rare to know instantly which role is “the one” so it pays to keep your options open. Research shows that candidates usually look at around three opportunities before making a final decision. Comparing a few options helps you understand what’s out there, what you value most, and what feels like the right fit.
Don’t dismiss unexpected opportunities
Sometimes the role you least expect turns out to be perfect. It can be tempting to rule out an opportunity too quickly. For example, the school’s location might not appeal, or its reputation might seem uncertain. However, until you’ve walked through the doors, met the people, and seen how things work day-to-day, you can’t really know what it would be like.
Trust your consultant
One of our team recently worked with an English teacher who had almost discounted a school because of its location. After some encouragement, she went to the interview. She discovered that the department was supportive and that the leadership and teamwork matched what she was looking for. As a result, she realised it was the perfect fit.
This is where our consultants can help. They speak with schools every day and often have insights you won’t find in a job description.
The Benefits of Keeping an Open Mind
A school that “requires improvement” on paper might have a thriving, forward-thinking department. A role that doesn’t look appealing in an advert could be led by a headteacher building something exciting. By being open to suggestions, you give yourself the best chance of finding a role that truly fits.
This approach applies to teachers, teaching assistants, and other school roles. The right job isn’t always the one you expect. Therefore, keeping an open mind is the best way to discover it.
Timing Matters
For teachers, the resignation deadline of 31st October is approaching for anyone hoping to start a new role in January. That means now is the perfect time to explore options. Schools are actively recruiting, and there’s a wide choice of roles available.
For support staff, opportunities can arise throughout the year. Still, starting conversations early gives you more choice and time to weigh things up, rather than feeling rushed later.
So, if you’re thinking about your next move, our advice is simple. Keep your options open, attend interviews, and make the most of your consultant’s knowledge and experience. You might find that the role you hadn’t expected turns out to be exactly the one for you.
